People of Idlewild

Madame C.J. Walker, the first self-made U.S. woman millionaire, owned property at Idlewild.
Lela Wilson bought property about four miles from Idlewild at Paradise Lake, where she built a hotel, store and nightclub.

Keep Idlewild Michigan Alive
Idlewild, a fashionable vacation spot known "the resort that segregation built," has a slightly different history. Established in 1912, it was one of the earliest resorts established specifically for African Americans (yet it was created by white entrepreneurs.) Nevertheless, the resort was extremely popular as a vacation spot and a stop on the entertainment circuit for a veritable who's who of African American society. Today, the community is largely impoverished, having lost much of its seasonal population, but there are efforts underway to reinvigorate this once vibrant summer community.
